Overwhelmed by Medicare? Here’s How to Avoid the Struggles My Mom Faced

As the head of the bookkeeping department for the Visiting Nurses Association of Albany, NY, Sylvia had a sharp mind for numbers and a solid understanding of the healthcare system—enough to be dangerous. She had spent decades around hospitals, insurance codes, and medical professionals, which gave her confidence as she approached her own Medicare journey.

Sylvia’s Story: Why No One Should Navigate Medicare Alone

As the head of the bookkeeping department for the Visiting Nurses Association of Albany, NY, Sylvia had a sharp mind for numbers and a solid understanding of the healthcare system—enough to be dangerous. She had spent decades around hospitals, insurance codes, and medical professionals, which gave her confidence as she approached her own Medicare journey.

Like many people in their mid-sixties, Sylvia was eagerly anticipating retirement. She looked forward to enjoying the fruits of her hard work and entering a new season of life. But as her retirement day approached, she found herself facing a task more overwhelming than she ever expected: choosing a Medicare plan.

Even with her background in healthcare administration, Sylvia was quickly caught in a web of confusion. The options, coverage rules, and plan differences felt endless. And for someone dealing with serious health conditions—diabetes, atrial fibrillation (AFIB), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—the stakes were high. She needed access to excellent care, trusted specialists, and reliable, affordable prescription coverage.

As a widow on a fixed income, Sylvia was cautious. She didn’t want to waste money on the wrong plan, nor could she afford to make a costly mistake. So, like many, she tried to do it all herself. She spent countless hours on research, comparing options, reading materials, and calling insurance companies. But despite all the effort, she was still unsure of what was truly best for her unique situation.

She was alone, trying to figure out one of the most complex systems in American healthcare. And it was too much.

Sylvia passed away in November of 2014.

She was my mom.

My name is Lance O’Brien, and I am the Chief Executive Officer of MediConnect.

Looking back, I carry a deep regret: I wish I knew then what I know now. I wish I could have been there to help my mom understand her Medicare options, to cut through the noise, and to give her the peace of mind she so desperately deserved. I could have lifted that burden from her shoulders. I could have helped her feel safe, supported, and confident in her coverage.

That experience changed my life—and shaped my mission.

It’s why I do what I do today.

At MediConnect, we’re committed to making sure no one has to go through what Sylvia did. Medicare shouldn’t be a puzzle that only experts can solve. It should be clear, accessible, and centered around your needs—not just a collection of plans and policies.

We are proud to be your Medicare advocates. Our goal is to walk with you every step of the way—to educate, to simplify, and to support.

So many of the people we meet come to us feeling the way Sylvia did: overwhelmed, stressed, and scared of making the wrong decision. They’ve been bombarded by phone calls, junk mail, and sales pitches. They’ve tried to make sense of it all, and they’re just tired.

That’s where we come in.

That’s my personal promise to you.
