Are You Falling for These Costly Medicare Myths?

Are You Falling for These Costly Medicare Myths?

When you turn 65, you’re suddenly your own HR representative—except you never applied for the job.

Think about it: during your working years, when annual enrollment rolled around, your employer handed you a few insurance options and said, “Pick one.” They had already sorted through the details, analyzed the rule changes, and negotiated with carriers. All you had to do was decide on coverage and cost.

It was simple. It was streamlined.

Then comes Medicare.

One of the first questions we hear is, “Why do they make this so complicated?”

And they’re right. The Medicare landscape can feel like a maze. The sheer amount of information coming your way is overwhelming. It’s not just the endless phone calls and TV commercials—it’s the mountain of mail. Stacks of flyers, glossy postcards, and brochures flood your home, making a phone book look slim.

With all this information flooding in, it’s easy to fall victim to what I call Analysis Paralysis. The sheer volume of content leads to overthinking, anxiety, and ultimately, the inability to make a decision for fear of making the wrong one.

But the challenge doesn’t stop with the volume of information. The real issue lies in its wicked step-sister: MISS-INFORMATION. With so much content to sift through, it’s inevitable that the truth gets distorted, and what should be clear often becomes cloudy.

Misinformation: The Real Threat

At a recent educational seminar, I asked, “How many of you have been told you’ll get a penalty if you don’t sign up for Medicare at 65?”

More than half the audience raised their hands. The truth? I wasn’t shocked.

Can you get a penalty for not enrolling at age 65?

You can. But not everyone will get one. It depends on your specific situation.

As I dug deeper, I discovered one person in attendance who had followed this MIS-INFORMATION and ended up enrolling in Part A while still contributing to their HSA (Health Savings Account) through their employer. This mistake unknowingly exposed them to tax liabilities on their contributions and additional penalties.

This is just one example, but there are many more.

Common Medicare Misinformation You Should Know About

Here are just a few myths that lead people astray:

  • You’re automatically enrolled in Medicare.
Not always. You need to sign up in some cases, especially if you’re still working and covered by an employer plan.
  • Original Medicare covers all your medical expenses.
It doesn’t. You’ll still have out-of-pocket costs, which is why many people choose to add a Medicare Supplementor Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans are the same.
They aren’t. They serve different purposes, and the coverage varies widely.
  • You don’t need drug coverage if you don’t take prescriptions.
You might face penalties later. Medicare imposes penalties for late enrollment in prescription drug coverage, even if you don’t take medications now.
